Yep, and it'll work fine until you trash your engine. Folks, this is a single-cylinder wet-clutch bike. There's WAYYYY to much metal meshing around in that one pool of oil to screw with. By dipping your filter in gasoline, you solved any gummed up oil, and possible washed away some surface dirt, grime, and metal particles. But the filter element has still broken down some, and the particles that worked their way into the filter are still there. Sure it worked OK, but you could also just jam an old t-shirt in there and it work OK (again for a while). Your filter will clog, your bike will overheat, your gears will grind, your engine will freeze, etc, etc....
Oil and filters are CHEAP insurance. Ask some of the high mileage guys.
Call me when your engine freezes, maybe I'll buy some of your bike when you part it out......
